The Short Answer: No
Whitening products, whether over-the-counter strips or professional gels, do not work on dental crowns, veneers, bridges, or fillings. Natural teeth are porous. Whitening agents (usually hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) soak into the enamel and break down stain molecules deep inside. That’s how your teeth get brighter.
But crowns and veneers are made from porcelain or ceramic. These materials are non-porous, like a glass countertop. Whitening gel has nowhere to go. It just sits on the surface and then rinses away, leaving the restoration exactly the same shade as before.
So What Happens Over Time?
Your natural teeth will continue to darken over the years from coffee, tea, red wine, or just aging. Your crowns and veneers stay the same color they were the day they were placed.

Option 1: Whiten First, Then Match New Restorations
This is the ideal sequence. If you’re planning to get crowns or veneers, whiten your natural teeth first. Wait about two weeks for your shade to settle, then come back for your restorations. We’ll match your crowns or veneers to your new, whiter smile. Problem solved before it starts.
Option 2: Whiten Your Natural Teeth Now, Then Replace Old Restorations
If you already have mismatched crowns or veneers, you can still whiten your natural teeth. Once you reach your desired shade, we can replace just those restorations to match your brighter smile. Yes, that means new crowns or veneers. But it’s the only way to get everything matching again.
Option 3: Keep Things Where They Are
If your restorations still look good and you don’t want to replace them, skip whitening altogether. Stick with regular cleanings to keep your natural teeth looking their best. Sometimes “good enough” really is good enough.
A Note on At-Home Kits
